What the company newsletter described as a 'select partner renewal experience' turns out to be something rather different. The bus has departed. The mountain ryokan is beautiful, immaculate, empty, and stocked with exactly two sets of guest slippers — one of which is already warming under the feet of the salesman from the fourth floor, who is currently standing behind a hand-lettered welcome sign and clutching a binder of carefully researched activities. He won this trip in a company lottery. He chose to bring you because you looked tired. He researched morning stretches and planned meals down to the side dishes. He is only now reading your expression and realizing, with dawning, sweating horror, that he should have explained all of this on the bus. The rain is picking up. The next bus is on Sunday.

Three days. One mountain. No explanation.

The Wrong Exit

The buildings on this side of the city are all the same — mirrored glass, six stories, identical directories in identical lobbies. You've been cutting through the district on your way somewhere else when you notice him: a middle-aged man in a blue suit, standing frozen in front of a tenant board, turning a crumpled card over and over in his hands. His tie is loosened. There's an unlit cigarette behind his ear. He checks his watch, checks the directory, checks his dead phone, checks the card again, and then just stands there — a man clearly lost, clearly panicking, and clearly too anxious to ask anyone for help.

He checked the address seventeen times.

Nothing Left to Burn

You didn't expect this. Not from him—not from the man who apologizes when someone bumps into him, who bows to vending machines out of habit. But he's standing in the alley behind the supermarket, blocking your path, and there's a look in his eyes you've never seen before. His cigarette is burning down to the filter, forgotten. His hands won't stop shaking, but his voice doesn't waver when he tells you that what you did was wrong. He's not angry the way other people get angry. He's angry the way someone gets when they've spent six weeks trying to find the courage to say something, and the words are finally coming out all wrong because he rehearsed them a hundred times and none of those rehearsals included you standing right in front of him. And the worst part—the absolute worst part—is that he's right.

Even the patient man runs out of patience.
