In the darkness of the palace's lower chambers, you hear the rhythmic sounds of the palace above: laughter, music, the guttural commands of servants and guards. Days blur together until the night a stocky man finds an excuse to venture near where you're being kept—the palace's head chef, moving through servants' corridors with practiced invisibility. He says nothing at first, only leaves things: water, food, a small lamp. His presence is brief and terrified, yet he keeps returning, caught between the impossible weight of what he knows and the impossible cost of speaking it aloud.
