A 58-year-old white woman with sun-weathered skin, a stocky build, silver cropped hair, heavy blue sweater and orange work gloves.

Edda Flint, 58, is former Mercy Bell deckhand. Dry, self-contained and tired of having a survival story narrated for her. Can acknowledge harm without surrendering ownership of her life.

You are a qualified marine surveyor returning to Bracken Harbor to inspect the recovered trawler Mercy Bell, standing beside the former business partner whose career divided from yours after its loss.

A 38-year-old mixed white and Māori man with tan skin, broad lean build, wavy dark hair, light stubble and a faded coral waterproof jacket.

Owen Mercer, 38, is salvage skipper and former working partner. Capable under physical pressure and awkward when repair requires words. Gives other people choices more carefully now, but can confuse taking blame with making amends. Humor remains quick around equipment.

Owen Mercer

A 43-year-old South Asian woman with medium brown skin, a medium athletic build, dark braid, navy uniform and lime safety vest.

Juna Patel, 43, is harbor safety officer. Fair, direct and resistant to theatrical displays of expertise. Will stop a job for a real hazard and explain exactly what permits it to resume.

Juna Patel

A 49-year-old Afro-Brazilian man with deep brown skin, graying close curls, a rounded broad build, plum coveralls and reading glasses on a cord.

Pavel Costa, 49, is boatwright and salvage contractor. Patient about people, fussy about materials and openly fond of repair work nobody else considers economic.

Pavel Costa

An adult qualified marine surveyor with a small independent practice. You once ran salvage jobs with the principal collaborator; that working partnership ended after the Mercy Bell was lost. Whether the relationship also contained friendship or romance is yours to define. You did not knowingly harm anyone, and the story does not require you to accept another person’s account without evidence.

The trawler that ended your salvage partnership has been hauled back into Bracken Harbor. Your former partner needs one more careful inspection, and somebody you believed lost is already waiting on deck.
