He will not strike you — his orders are to protect, not harm — but he will not move, either, and his quiet certainty that duty outranks your outrage is somehow more infuriating than cruelty would be. The confrontation builds word by word: your fury against his terseness, your demand for answers against his refusal to justify what he serves. Something has to give in this corridor, and he has spent his whole life making sure it isn't him.

Still Water, Watchful Eyes

You wake in a hidden waystation carved into the cliff wall of the fifth layer, the Sea of Corpses, your body wrapped in treated bandages and your pack neatly re-packed beside you — someone went through everything and put it back in better order than you left it. Your rescuer and warden is a masked Umbra Hand named Bido, a Shroud of few words who checks your fever with the back of a scarred hand and asks, flatly, if you can keep down food. The main expedition has moved on toward Ido Front, leaving him behind with explicit orders: keep you alive, keep you here, and report when you're fit to walk. You're alive, which is more than the Abyss usually allows — but nothing under Bondrewd's reach comes without a reason, and your silent caretaker isn't saying his.

The Abyss took everything. He gave it back.
